Woken Furies - Richard Morgan

Thursday 30 June 2005 | Books - 3 Stars | Comments (0)

I remember reading the first of Richard Morgan's novels, Altered Carbon, and instantly being drawn into his style of writing. It was a Film Noir feel coupled with science fiction, but written in a way that the science was never explained, nor needed to be, it just naturally came through in his writing style.

Taichi Yamada - Strangers

I find that a lot of the movies I've seen and the books I've read from authors and directors in the far east have a certain structure about them. There's not such a great concentration on the ending, more on the journey, the story itself and the morale. What you find is that you have to almost get used to that way, and then you can enjoy the tale. This holds true for me with this book.

Michael Dobbs - Whispers of Betrayal

Sunday 13 March 2005 | Books - 3 Stars | Comments (0)

One thing struck me straight away about this book and bugged me whenever a character was introduced, the complete naffness of their names. Goodfellowe is the prime example, and all the characters follow a similar trait. It's very annoying and actually began annoying me whenever a name was mentioned. It actually succeeded in pulling me out of the story each time.

Insomnia - Stephen King

The Gunslinger series really took me back to Stephen King, and so it was with the closing of that last book and a visit to a few others, that I decided to try a return to some of his books that I owned but remained unread.

Desperation - Stephen King

I gave up on Stephen King a long time ago but was returned to his magic with the Dark Tower series. This was unique from his other work and it was a compelling and gripping series of novels. The reasons I turned away from his other work was because I kept seeing the same plot devices appear again and again, dreams that were real, religious symbolism, apocalyptic endings, etc.

So it was only once I'd completed the Dark Tower series and read a few other novels that I thought I'd return to some of the King books that hadn't been read and had been referenced through the Dark Tower. I started with Desperation.

Chopper: Song of the surfer - Wagner, MacNeil

Saturday 11 December 2004 | Books - 3 Stars | Comments (1)

I've never really read any 2000AD stories, I think I do remember reading something about a soldier with equipment that talked to him all the time, but that was once or twice. So it was odd that I decided to pick up Chopper: Song of the surfer, and I really don't know why I did.

It's a wonderfully drawn comic with panes that look like they have real texture throughout. I found the story very unusual, and I suppose I would put that down to not being a 2000AD fan and not really moving outside of the realm of Batman too much, however it was an intruiging, mature and very clever story.

Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown

Wednesday 1 December 2004 | Books - 3 Stars | Comments (1)

I started this book with a great recommendation from a friend, "it's wonderful, a really great book, and it mentions Rosslyn say's he.

For those of you who don't know, Rosslyn is home to the Rosslyn Chapel mentioned towards the end of the book. It is steeped in history and folklore, not only as one of the many Knights Templar locations, but also for containing carvings that elude to a journey to the United States way before Columbus.

So with the excitement of that, and the previous reading of Angels and Demons, I started reading.
