Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - Standard Edition

Wednesday 28 December 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

There were many bad reviews of this movie when it came out, but I was still attracted to its styling, the cast, and the feeling of being an old serial movie full of gung-ho much like the Flash Gordon series. So it remained on my list for a long time and just recently arrived.

I can't say I was disappointed for all that I expected of it, although I was disappointed by the lacklustre DVD offering, but it let itself down in just rushing too much through the story.

Initial D (Tau man chi D)

Monday 7 November 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

You know I'm a man and I like cars. There's nothing to be ashamed of there. I also liked The Fast and the Furious, it had some fun in there but it also had big, fast, shiny cars, and one like mine too. So when I heard that there was this movie (Initial D) about drift racing popular with Japanese teenagers and it had been adapted from the Manga story, I was interested, and courtesy of Moviesville, I got to see it.

Nick of Time

Sunday 23 October 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

I remember watching Nick of Time, forgive me, a long time ago. Ever since then whenever people talk about how revolutionary 24 is, I mention this movie. Nick of Time is filmed in real time, and I don't think it's the first one, but it's definitely the first I've seen. Yet it's not overly in your face, there's no ticking clock all over the screen, and even without the knowledge that it's happening in your time frame it's still suspenseful.

Public Enemy

Saturday 15 October 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

The trailer makes this movie seem like a slick visually rich thriller about a cop chasing down a cold killer, unfortunately the film doesn't live up to that premise.

Chopper

Monday 25 April 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (1)

This was a bit of a disappointment for me as a few friends had recommended it to me and have continued to remind me of it whenever they can. So when I actually saw it I really felt it didn't live up to their recommendations. They had really made it out to be a violent and over the top movie showing the life of one of the most violent criminals there has been, and that's not what I saw.

Timeline

Tuesday 12 April 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (3)

I've thrown myself into Gerard Butler movies, well I'm trying to at least. Mainly because I might on the remotest chance in hell get to interview him, that would be truly superb, but I don't know how likely it will be but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying my contact comes through. With that I decided to watch Timeline.

I'm not a big fan of Michael Chrichton, oh I know this will get me hit with titles of books, movies and TV shows and "what about this one" pleas, but something always sticks in my throat about him. He wrote Westworld, the story of a pleasure park where the man made attractions go wild and rebel against their human captors. Do I have to go on? Sounds like the sequel, and the Jurassic Park movies? Sure he's done different things since, but that really stuck with me and bugged me to the point of not watching his movies or reading his books.

Cypher

Wednesday 16 March 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

This is really difficult to review for me, because I want to reward a movie that breaks from Hollywood and does something different, I especially want to reward the maker of the Cube by following up with a non-mainstream Hollywood movie. It's just difficult to do with Cypher.

Otogiriso (St John's Wort)

Friday 4 February 2005 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

The movie doesn't exactly kick off it just flows on to a beginning. Mixing between future images, dreams, computer artwork and the real story, it's all very confusing. However, like many Asian films if you hold on in there things start to become clear, and they do just that.

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

Sunday 26 December 2004 | DVD - 2 Stars | Comments (0)

I had a dim view of the Potter series of books for sometime now, with a mixture of reading reviews and total rebellion at the complete overhype of them. However I'd recently sat down and started thinking about how biased and closed those ideas were and thought that I should at least give them a go. Never happened though, and I committed myself to watching the first movie in the DVD Boxset which I gave my girlfriend for her Christmas.
