Ônibus 174 (Bus 174)

When I rented this movie I had no real idea what to expect. I had no prior knowledge of the event or of the documentary itself, and all that I was going on was another viewers review on my DVD rental queue, the rating itself, and the tagline - that the bus was hijacked and broadcast live on television.
It's also hard hitting. The team behind this documentary have done an amazing job to bring the story and the messages to the front of the film, and it's amazing just how well they do it.

The Book of Cool

Having trouble finding a really great gift for someone? Do you know someone who has everything and you can't find something unique to get them? Well I've found the answer in the form of a DVD boxset called The Book of Cool, Part One.
It's a whopping nine hours, three DVD's and one, three hundred and seventeen page refresher book, all designed to give that person who has everything the skill and knowledge to put those things to some use, and to start to look damn cool. You only have to watch the trailer to see some of the things you could be doing within minutes of watching the DVD. I do urge you to watch the trailer, it's a very nice piece of filming and editing, and not at all different from how the segments on the DVD are filmed.

The House of Sand and Fog

From the moment you see the cover of this DVD or read the blurb you're interested in seeing it. Having the front cover adorned with the enigmatic and highly rated actors Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly, who is also quite beautiful to boot, is enough to grab your attention. Then there's the title and premise, both totally intriguing and based on a simple battle of real people, but as with all tragedies the situation is stretched and and hightened, and in this case to superb effect.

Oldboy

I'm a big fan of Asian cinema and have been for a long time. They do love working with film and can produce some really intelligent and passionate talent who can flourish without the Studio influence and control we see in Hollywood.
I'd heard much about Oldboy as being one of the best of Asian cinema and I can definitely say that after seeing it those voices weren't wrong.
Infernal Affairs

This is another movie that I'd been told lot's about and had recommended to me time and time again, especially as I was a fan of Asian cinema. So when I finally saw it my expectations were very high, and that made me very wary too. I didn't want to be disappointed or overly eager. When I saw it, I was stunned.

The Last Samurai

I was biased from the get go on this movie, totally biased. Tom Cruise playing a hero again, and a movie where the Americans go and teach the Japanese how to fight. I just saw a big epic with Cruise-isms all over it and another movie where anything about the historical aspect of the Japanese is lost in a parade of how great America is and how they saved Japan. I was wrong, incredibly so.

Tears of the Sun

I knew I was guaranteed excitement and explosions with Bruce Willis involved in a war\action flick, but I wasn't prepared for his outstanding performance, a huge strong cast alongside him and a punishing film which highlights the pain and genocide that Africa struggles with year after year.
