How to slice a loaf, legally

Just a quick bit of background before I had over to my father. For his entire working life he’s been involved in Environmental Health, from the beginnings of his career as a Sanitary Inspector, all the way up to being second in charge of Aberdeen’s Environmental Health department – everything from noise to water pollution, from food hygiene to dog wardens. Even after his retirement he was involved in food hygiene consultancy and pest control.

One day he sent me this little write up of how, according to official guidelines and laws, you are supposed to slice a loaf of bread, including all the pre-requisites that you should have in place.

My MP defends car owners’ tax

My MP was talking in the Commons yesterday about the Government’s rise in the tax for owning a car and tries to explain it away by saying that this is to persuade the car manufacturers to make efficient cars.

That’s despite the fact that it’s penalising the individual and not for mileage or emissions, but for actually owning the car and never even starting the engine.

Labour lies about Green Tax

While jets fly back and forth from the UK, US and China for the G8 summit for Gordon Brown and the Labour party, some even empty, motorists here are facing what Labour call a “Green Tax” for their cars.

Budget hits me for not driving – so called Green Taxes.

Sorry Mr Fat Controller, I just don’t get it. The Chancellor has made some budget changes allegedly aimed at dropping carbon emissions from cars, not at raising money for the Government, oh no. Yet in my circumstance I’m going to be penalised for keeping my car in the garage, running it under three thousand miles a year and cycling to work.

I’m actually better buying an old emission heavy car and selling my current car. I would be better off buying a pre 2001 four or five litre American muscle car that churns out emissions. I would even be better off buying a small engined 4×4 or People Carrier and using that on the roads!

Why am I being penalised for keeping a car in my garage with the engine off?

Scottish Executive environment head commutes by jet!

Scotland is fighting to become a very green country. The Scottish Executive is investing £35 million over three years in renewable sources of energy, and there are schemes for rubbish recycling, reduction of emissions, increase of public transport, and so on. Solar panels are even appearing on roadsides to power various electronic equipment.

Then we find that the head of the Scottish Executive department in charge of lowering the greenhouse gas emissions flies a 500 mile round trip every week to commute to work because he doesn’t want to move. Apparently that’s approximately 100kg of carbon each week.
